3D - THE WORLD OF NURBS AND POLYGONS
" A non-trivial excursion into creative engineering. "

OVERVIEW

Allan's introduction into the realm of 3D started in the early 1990's on a small computer that would take 2 days to render a simple image with reflections and shadows. This was when Photoshop didn't have layers and only one undo. But his passion for modeling and rendering objects and scenes kept him glued to his monitor and always seaking out better software and hardware. When he finally took his first 3D class in college, he was considered the honorary student teacher, helping many of the struggling fellow students in thinking like an engineer as well as a creative.

He continued over the years to use his three dimensional skills by providing supporting elements in his graphic and Web design work. From posters to full page advertisements to early Web banner advertising, 3D gave his employers cutting-edge looks compared to the usual, flat and uninteresting traditional marketing and advertsing campaigns. Additionally, he used 3D software to create software interface designs for Lowe's and provided 3D mock-ups of a large conference booth, assisting the senior staff in visualizing demonstration areas and determining traffic flow before construction.

After about 11 years of professionally working for others, Allan invested in a powerful computer and decided to hang his own shingle, Sturm Design. To his suprise, one of his first clients needed to visualize their 2 patents of a propulsion system for a light rail capable of 200mph. With simple plan drawings, he worked closely with the engineers for nearly a year to bring their ideas to life with still frame illustrations and animated renderings of the vehicle operating in real-world settings.

When the Chair of the Digital Arts program of Pima Community College saw Allan's 3D light rail project, he offered him an Adjunct Faculty position on the spot. Allan has since been teaching Maya for the past two years.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Allan has numerous recommendations from not only his previous employers and his current clients, but also students and staff of the college that have taken his Maya classes.

ALLAN'S PHILOSOPHY ON 3D

" When done correctly, 3D animations can captivate your audience. We naturally seek reality in presentations, even if it looks like a cartoon. "
